STEP BALANCE THERAPY: how it all began

After graduating American International College in May of 2023, Dr. Onaysia Martinez, PT, DPT or Dr. "O" as her patients call her, set out to make a change in this world by healing others and taking away their pain. She began her work at a well-known outpatient clinic in Oceanside, NY where she gained experience working with patients with vertigo, balance/instability problems, constant falls, Parkinson's disease, post stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, COPD, and lymphedema. After working in the outpatient setting, Dr. O knew she could do so much more for her patients if she had 1-on-1 treatments with them so she decided to take her talents to home care.

Throughout her time treating patients within the home, Dr. O found a common trend throughout the geriatric or elderly population. There were so many contributing factors that limited optimal care such as patient schedule demands, limited insurance reimbursements, and patients requiring extra time to truly feel comfortable enough to work on aspects of therapy that were challenging such as fall prevention. So many of her patients were afraid of falling within their homes or outdoors and ending up in a nursing home. In order to truly get a global picture of what her patients were feeling, Dr. O began working within the skilled nursing facility setting addressing patients with falls, balance issues, muscle weakness, and several other conditions. But, the same reoccurring trend came into factor amongst her patients at all the other settings: they were all too afraid to try and get better due to fear of failing which limited their potential to recover.

Fast forward to now, Dr. O has curated her own approach to physical therapy that addresses not only the physical state of mind, but also the emotional and psychological state of being. With each session, Dr. O provides health and wellness coaching that gears her patients up for going to battle against their condition. She takes the time to truly listen to them and get to the root cause of what is stopping them from getting their lives back. Whether that be fear of falling, fear of letting down a loved one, fear of taking a chance, fear of trusting a provider, Dr. O is able to guide her patients through these limiting factors so they are able to unleash their full potential and fully recover faster than ever before!
